On Saturday June 4th, 2016, Walk Oakland Bike Oakland and locals from the Golden Gate, Southwest Berkeley and Emeryville neighborhoods produced the third annual Love Our Neighborhood Day.

Novel Brewing Fundraiser

Novel Brewing is opening its doors, serving treats from Chile Jalapenos and Namaste Pizza, and live music from Honey of the Heart to raise funds to support and sustain Love Our Neighborhood Day. Attendees will also see a re-cap of Love Our Neighborhood Day through videos and photos.  This event is part of a broader effort to raise $10K for the annual Love Our Neighborhood Day in 2016 and onward with the local neighborhood associations.

Love Our Neighborhood Day is an annual car-free street event that brings families, neighbors and businesses out to play on San Pablo Avenue, between Ashby and Stanford.  On June 4, 2016, it brought 15,000 people to the San Pablo Avenue typically reserved for automobiles, and became a community and cultural center where hundreds of activities, music and dance performers got people singing, pedaling, dancing, strolling, playing, and reconnecting with friends and local shops, including the newest brewery in town, Novel Brewing.

This event is a celebration of the neighborhoods of Oakland: Golden Gate, Sante Fe, Longfellow, as well as West Berkeley and Emeryville.  Every dollar from ticket sales and tips that evening go towards the sustainability of the event.

If you’d like to donate $150 or more, you will be named in the video credits of the official Love Our Neighborhood Day 2016 event video – launching out September 1st, 2016!

We also have 100% of the song download profits going towards LOND! Get your song and support Love Our neighborhood Day Here: https://justinancheta.bandcamp.com/

Bring your vibrant dress-up attire, glitter, super hero costumes and rainbow suspenders! ~*~ It’s gonna get funky!

About The Band:

BLACKNATURE BAND  Black Nature is an original musical artist who composes and performs positive music that incorporates a unique blend of African Rhythms, Reggae, Dancehall, Rock, Hip-Hop and R&B. He is also a musical producer and filmmaker. As a young child, Black Nature began singing and playing percussion, and he was greatly influenced by the rich musical culture of Sierra Leone. In the midst of the country’s brutal 10 year civil war, he fled to neighboring Guinea where he was placed in a refugee camp. During his time at the camp, he and other Sierra Leonean refugees formed a band that later became the world renowned Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars.

Over the years the Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have also collaborated and performed with many other well known musicians such as Aerosmith, Dispatch, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Lee Scratch Perry, Burning Spear, Damian Marley, Wyclef Jean, Chadwick Stokes, Mavis Staples, Trombone Shorty, Bonerama, Chris Velan, Dan Zanes, and Toubab Krewe. For booking information, please contact: Booking@BlackNatureBand.com.

JUSTIN ANCHETA BAND is a positively-charged, high-energy band from San Francisco. They bring together exotic world sounds with some heavy doses of funk and reggae. Lacing socially-conscious lyrics with horn, violin and guitar melodies over a steady foundation of drums, percussion, and bass, the band creates a dance party for everyone to enjoy. Locally acclaimed, they play venues such as the Independent, Slim’s, Yoshi’s, and the Great American Music Hall, while their tour schedule has taken them from Barcelona to Hawaii. After more than a decade of shows and touring, they have shared the stage with The Wailers, Joan Baez, Creedence Clearwater Survival, Charles Neville and many more musical luminaries.

The Justin Ancheta Band’s music is an invitation to dance, while the music and lyrics are complex and intelligent and leave a sweet aftertaste in the heart and soul. “A beat that is global in scope.” — Gus Thompson, Auburn Journal “One of the best and brightest bands…” — Mark S. Allen, Good Morning Sacramento (KMAX Channel 31)

THE AFROFUNK EXPERIENCE is an ambrosial mix of musical interpretations influenced by the African diaspora, created in a collective and organic manner. With Sila Mutungi they comprised the award-winning group Sila and the Afrofunk Experience until 2010, providing songs and grooves that earned them the title “The Bay Area’s Dance Kings”, as well as the NAACP Image Award’s Outstanding World Music Album for “Black President” and the SF Weekly Music Award’s Best International Act.

Love Our Neighborhood Day 2016LOND15_WebGraphic_3 JPG

We are excited to announce that Soul Graffiti  will be taking a significant leadership role in the support and production of Love Our Neighborhood Day! Our very own Justin Ancheta is the Director of this special community event. Love Our Neighborhood Day is inspiring much creative and community supportive energy in the studio where we have been hosting the planning session for months now.

Love Our Neighborhood Day  is an event created by Open Streets
East Bay Open Streets programs are modeled after “Ciclovia”, which originated in Bogotá, Colombia. Walk Oakland Bike Oakland partners with communities to produce Open Streets events for all to enjoy free health and community-oriented activities on city streets temporarily closed to automobile traffic.

Open Street events are unique: They are non-commercial (no on-street vending except for food), and are focused on getting you to PLAY and to MOVE! You’ll experience the roadway differently: streets become a people-centered public space that is calm, vibrant, and imaginative.

Between 10,000 to 40,000 participants come out to play at each event.WOBO has produced Open Streets events in the East Bay since its inaugural event, Oaklavía, in 2010.
It is an honor for us to get to contribute to events like this which contain and include so much meaningful landscape for more of a sense of connection, health and community. We would love your companionship and support. Please contact us at HERE for more information, or to volunteer

Thank you all for your continued support and inspiration!

Our paint job & video production studio is almost complete!! After much discussion about color, testing of swatches and boldness vs subtlety, AND we went with BOLD, and painted our beloved studio walls a deep slate grey and a deep orangy- red. The lights were assembled last week, and are ready to be placed, along with cameras and mics.

We have been busy making use of the depth and rich fertile ground that Winter has left us with.  We are gearing up to ride the wave of Spring’s driven and inspired movement forward! Here are a few of the plans below:
